Project Information for Teaching in Argentina

Education in Argentina

Since the 1960's Argentina has been able to boast an educational system of an excellent worldwide standard. By law all children between the ages of six and fourteen have to go to school. Education is free and available to everyone. Argentina's literacy rate is 95%, the highest in Latin America. Although Argentina has a well established and successful educational system, that is not to say that volunteers are not in need. Native English speakers are always a huge asset to schools, and your help with spoken English will be invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Our Teaching Projects in Argentina

As the language of business and commerce it is important for English to be taught across the globe and secondary schools in Argentina are keen for pupils to learn English.

Our teaching placements are situated in the town of Unquillo in the province of Cordoba and offer you the chance to help provide a head-start for pupils in the local schools. This is an opportunity for you to be as creative as possible, help making learning English fun and enjoyable. Whether you are assisting a teacher, have a class of your own or are taking extra curricular classes, your help is greatly needed. Working at the schools is enjoyable and rewarding. Through the use of authentic materials, games and songs you can engage the students and make them eager to learn!

The Volunteer's Role

Volunteers currently teach at one several different schools. The first is called the "New Millennium" school which is a primary school whose pupils are between the ages of 6 and 11. The second is a secondary school with children aged 11 to 17. In this school the volunteers teach English with the supervision of an English professor. The third school is in Villa Beyond, a place very close to Unquillo, where the volunteers also teach English. Volunteers are also sent to teach in an orphanage called "Home San Francisco" which is under the direction of nuns. At all placements volunteers are encouraged to take part in other activities such as coaching football. Volunteers will be expected to work up to 4 hours per day from Monday to Friday but if you want more teaching time, that could be arranged. It proves helpful if volunteers already speak some basic Spanish although this is not a prerequisite.

Teaching Argentinean students is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. They are spirited and charming and eager to learn. The role of the volunteer is to improve their spoken English skills. Volunteers often find songs and games popular and useful in maintaining their attention and in encouraging them to speak or sing in English. You may be asked to teach some grammar and a good English grammar book can be a worthwhile investment.

Seeing the results of your efforts is a thoroughly rewarding experience!
